Quote/Hadith of the week

For just O my Servants who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah: for Allah forgives all sins’: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” (39:53)

Welcome back – Term 2

Salaam and welcome back for the second term. Alhamdulillah the website has come just in time as this is the time of year when things really start getting busy. Firstly for those of you that are unlucky enough to have exams and assignments due in very soon the Islamic Society would like to wish you the very best and we hope that all your preparations and hard work are rewarded InshAllah. May Allah swt make these exams and assignments easy for you all. Ameen.

InshAllah we will be hosting Islam Awareness Week between 11th – 15th February. For those who don’t know what Islam Awareness Week is and have not experienced it for themselves in the past please read our latest article soon to be published in NTU’s Platform Magazine…

The idea behind Islam Awareness Week is simple; to create an opportunity for non- Muslims as well as Muslims to learn more about the Islamic faith within a familiar, relaxed and fun environment. The Week is primarily aimed at non- Muslims on campus, at work in the city and the local community.  It creates a fantastic opportunity for Muslims to come together, create an awareness of their faith and to answer the many questions that are often thought of but never addressed by others for whatever the reason.  It is also an opportunity for Muslims on campus to become real ambassadors of Islam and for others to take hold of this opportunity and in turn, get to know Muslims.  You all know the saying: ‘You don’t ask you don’t know’, right?  So I urge you all to get involved this year, attend the diverse range of lectures and activities and become more aware….

The Islamic Society puts a lot of effort into hosting the week.  Guest speakers, artists and all kinds of interesting people are invited from across the country for your benefit.  Some of the events the Isoc have put on in the past include: Islamic art exhibitions, real life Islam conversion stories, big time food opportunities- such as dinners, lunches, tea time talks and a whole range of topical lectures such as ‘Proof of God’, ‘The Darwin Theory’ as well as the much discussed topics such as ‘Terrorism’ and women in Islam.

Islam Awareness Week 2008 will be held from 11th- 15th February this year, and will be packed with inspiring talks on proving that Allah swt exists, the role of women, multi-faith dialogue on the prophets, traditional food from all over the globe, an art exhibition and much more!  The theme will be based around misconceptions about Islam and the events will take place in both debate and open discussion form. So feel free to come down and ask whatever you like.

Isoc members will be around campus leafleting and raising awareness a week prior to the event as well as throughout the week.  You’ll recognize them by either their Isoc hoodies or Islam Awareness Week T-shirts.  Their all very helpful and pretty unmissable, so if you do have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask!

If you have any ideas you would like to put forward to the committee then please send them to This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it

We will need all the help we can get for the lead up to IA week and during it. So we ask all our members, brothers and sisters to get involved and help out wherever and whenever possible. From raising awareness to distributing flyers/leaflets, setting up stalls to just turning up to the events is all appreciated.

Other events to look out for are;

- Know your faith week

- Regular Tajweed and Tafsir classes (please see Sports and Activities section)

- Weekly circles (please see Sports and Activities section)

- Brothers social events

- Sisters social events

- More sporting activities and tournaments (please see Sports and Activities section)

And much more InshAllah…

We pray that we have the same if not more interest and enthusiasm from our members as we have done this term. If you have any ideas and suggestions for events or the ISOC in general please don’t hesitate to contact us at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it . Your views, opinions and feedback are important to us.

Here we have a suitable reminder that highlights an area which most of us may be guilty of and something we can all learn from InshAllah.

Giving Each Other the Benefit of the Doubt
by Abubakar N. Kasim
Toronto, Ontario

Human beings would achieve success in their relationships and interactions with one another if they were to give each other the benefit of the doubt.

Giving each other the benefit of the doubt is the key elements in removing suspicion, ill feelings and hate between friends and loved ones. It brings real peace and harmony between people in general. People nowadays rarely practice this noble principle in their dealings with each other.

A husband who sees his wife talking to a man might jump to conclusion and become suspicion of her. He does not even try to figure out the actual man his wife was talking to. It could have been her father or her brother or someone else who was lost and in need
for direction.

A wife who might see her husband with another woman might initiate a divorce without hesitation and without giving the husband the benefit of the doubt.

Friendship is easily ruined just because a friend did not return a phone call or did not respond to an invitation. God knows if the reason behind that was due to some serious illness, family problems or something of that sort.

I was once at a parking lot trying to warm up my vehicle in the middle of a cold night after a long and tiring day at work. I saw an empty beer bottle on the road.

I always try to follow the advice of Prophet Mohamed (SAW) in removing harmful things on the road. This act is highly recommended in Islam and is considered as an
act of charity.

Since I could not find any garbage bin around, I decided to take it with me in the car until I find one.

While I was driving, an interesting thought came to mind. If I were to forget the bottle in the vehicle and a Muslim friend had noticed it, what would have been his or her conclusion?

Or if I were to be involved in an accident and died and the bottle was discovered in the car, what would have been the conclusion that everyone might have
jumped to?

People would have come up with a lot of hypothesis about this discovery. Someone might have told my wife or the Imam at the mosque that although I was always at the mosque pretending to be an Angel, I was someone else outside and when I am away from everyone else.

Authorities might have also rushed into the conclusion that the accident was probably due to alcohol consumption. I doubt if there would have been anyone giving me the benefit of the doubt.

This incident has taught me a lesson on how important it is to give people the benefit of the doubt. It helps a lot to have positive thoughts about your fellow men in order to have a peace of mind and to build a true and lasting friendship that is based on loyalty, honesty and integrity.

If you encounter a speeding vehicle that had overtook you, don't let your emotion run high and start to act aggressively against the driver. It helps to overcome the situation by giving him the benefit of the doubt. He could be a doctor rushing to the hospital to save lives. He or she might be facing a calamity and must rush to make two ends meet.

Thinking bad of your fellow brother will only give you high blood pressure. It will boil you down, increase your anger, make your heart beat fast and eventually damage your health.

Next time if you see your brother in faith coming out from a bar, don't sound the alarm and start spreading rumours. It would help if you take a deep breath and analyze things first before anything else.

I was once in a middle of nowhere and I really had to use a bathroom. I could not control myself. It was one of those moments where you cannot hold yourself any longer. I had to find a bathroom or else. The only public place that was available in the vicinity was a bar. I had no option but to enter the place.

If humans have practiced this noble quality of giving each other the benefit of the doubt, our condition would have been far better and healthier than it is now. The planet would have been a peaceful place. We would have had lower divorce rates and less violence.

SubhanAllah, a beautiful message for us all. Have a good Eid and remember us in your prayers InshAllah.

Walaikum Salaam,

NTU Islamic Society.
